testing this site

Aug 23, 2008 at 5:29 PM by Rhian Salmon

Hi, my name is Rhian, I work for IPY and am interested to see how this site will work for the September 24th People Day.

If you are a teacher or student testing these pages, please also post some messages, upload files and experiment so that we can make sure we all know how to upload our stories, discussions, artwork, photos etc in the week of September 22nd.

Also, share your feedback so that we can all make the best use of this site!

looking forward to talking with you!

Hi Rhian

I have been exploring the functions of the site and it seems there is a lot that we can't do without paying for membership. Specifically, I tried to create a class but couldn't through not being a paying member.

However, the site is very different from what I am used to and I will continue to play around a little. I'll try uploading one of my students PowerPoint documents.

Hi again

I don't think we can post documents like PowerPoints. There is a limit on the size of what can be posted to the Blog and the Gallery is for images not documents. We can't embed the html text for a PowerPoint either.

But we can of course link to other sites and host the discussions here. The Blog, Student Writing and Gallery functions are fine as they are and anything external can be accessed easily.

Hi, I'm Matteo, an italian science teacher. (of ANDRILL project)
I've been invited to give a look to the TIG platform.
It seem to me quite friendly and easy to navigate and use.
AT the moment I've seen only these problems (I use firefox on Mac Os x):
In the bookmark section you can't add a bookmark (the link seems not working)
The counter is not always working properly. Sometimes it doesn't record my access
That's it.
I'll try later to go around and check other things

Hi again ...

I have now tried uploading a PowerPoint as "mixed media" in the class gallery upload section.

I have tried 3 different computers and each time I get the following message:

ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://polarday.tiged.org/collaboration/gallery/add?

The following error was encountered:

Zero Sized Reply
Squid did not receive any data for this request.

Your cache administrator is webmaster.

I hope that means something to someone! smile

This might be something to send along to the TIG webmasters.

Hi, Rhian!
This is Miriam (Brazil). I'm testing the site to make sure we'll be able to take part on the 24th. Still finding it a bit difficult, though (there are certain things that can only be done after you've become a paying member). I'm also trying to contact teachers from other countries whose pupils might be interested in exchanging ideas with us.
Looking forward to the next IPY Day!!!
All the best!

Hi Chris,

Can you tell me how big the powerpoint you are trying to upload is? That might explain the error - although the error should be more friendly - it may be that your browser is timing out.

Hi Michael

The Powerpoint is just under 5 mb. I decided to try that particular one as it is the largest of them - it is also one of the better ones.

Is there a maximum limit?

Hello,

This is the first time that I have tried to link up students to share on any public type network. I am hoping that it is acceptable that elementary students participate. Please let me know whether that is sosmile

Thank you

Hello--Bob Pirrie checking in from Storrs CT. I am collaborating with colleagues here at E. O. Smith High School on a year-long climate change project> One aspect of this project is the creation of a "Wiki" site (a collaborative informational website). I am hoping to link up with a school (secondary level ) in the arctic to set up an exchange among our students (hopefully on Polar Day) and to invite that school to participate in the wiki site. Thanks.
